On Sunday night, Benedicta Abonyi was kidnapped from her residence in Ikem-Uno, behind Ikem General Hospital.

However, amidst a fierce exchange of gunfire between security forces and the abductors, Abonyi managed to escape.

Tragically, the Anglican catechist was ambushed while working in the fields with his son on Monday morning. Although the son sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital, the catechist succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

An eyewitness recounted how a young girl, whose motorcycle was seized by the kidnappers, aided security forces by identifying the route taken by the assailants.

According to the witness, the kidnappers, believed to be seven in number, were ultimately identified as Fulani by Abonyi, who narrowly escaped capture the previous night.
