Former Senator Shehu Sani has highlighted the missed opportunity for Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu to ascend to Nigeria’s presidency in 1999, instead of Olusegun Obasanjo.
According to Sani, Onu, a respected figure and former governor of Abia State, won the primaries for the All Peoples Party (APP) in Kaduna, attended by notable figures like the late Chief Ojukwu.

However, a midnight merger with the then Alliance for Democracy (AD) led to his displacement, as the military favored Obasanjo and Falae for the presidency.
Sani praised Onu as a distinguished, decent, and disciplined politician who served Nigeria for over four decades with integrity.
He emphasized Onu’s unblemished record, noting his contributions as a senator, governor, presidential candidate, party chairman, and minister.
Despite his influential role, Onu remained modest, living in a rented residence throughout his tenure as a minister.
Sani concluded by honoring Onu’s memory and contributions to the nation.
