Daily Gazette correspondent who visited Mayor Market in Enugu South council area on Wednesday, observed that roadside businesses serve as vital sources of income, especially in areas with limited formal job opportunities.
They cater to commuters and passersby, offering convenient goods and services.
However, this influx has led to congestion and traffic flow obstruction, sparking debates over their long-term sustainability.

Safety concerns loom large in the minds of both residents and vendors.
One resident, speaking on the condition of anonymity, highlighted the potential for accidents due to crowded sidewalks and vehicles maneuvering around makeshift stalls.
He said lack of proper sanitation facilities poses health hazards, raising public health concerns.
No doubt, government intervention is crucial to strike a balance between economic growth and public safety.
Public safety specialist, Uche Okeke called on Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State as well as the Enugu South Local Government administrator to implement zoning regulations, designating suitable areas for roadside businesses to prevent obstruction of pedestrian walkways and traffic.
“Urgent investments in infrastructure, including designated parking areas and waste disposal facilities, are needed to mitigate environmental and health risks in Mayor Market, Enugu.”
