Early voting commenced Monday in South Africa’s general election, allowing those who need to work on polling day or who have special needs to cast their ballots ahead of the official voting day.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reported that approximately 1.6 million of the 27.6 million eligible voters were permitted to vote early.

This includes 624,000 individuals with mobility issues, who will be visited at home by election agents, and essential workers, who will access polling stations two days before the general public.
The rest of the electorate will cast their votes on Wednesday in South Africa’s sixth general election since the country’s transition to democracy in 1994.
This election is poised to be a potential landmark event, with opinion polls suggesting that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) might lose its absolute parliamentary majority for the first time.
