The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reaffirmed the significance of May 30th as a day of remembrance for the Igbo people and residents of the South-East to honor those who perished during the Nigerian Civil War from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970.

In a statement released on Tuesday by IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, the organization declared the May 30, 2024, sit-at-home directive as mandatory.

“We remind everyone residing in Biafra territory that the May 30th sit-at-home in commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day is inviolable, and we expect everyone to comply with this one-day directive.”

The statement emphasized IPOB’s vital role in Biafra-related matters, stating, “Remembering those who fought for Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty is crucial.”

“No government or security agency should harass anyone during this event. We urge state governors in Biafra Land to ensure safety on this day.”

IPOB stressed that the Nigerian government cannot prevent the commemoration of Biafran heroes.

“Those who defended our land against the extermination agenda during the 1967-1970 war deserve to be honored. We will continue to celebrate our heroes and heroines.”

The organization further announced a complete ban on activities in the South-East on May 30, 2024, and called on regional governors to ensure the security of lives and property.

“On this year’s Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, all social activities in Biafra Land are banned. Markets, schools, banks, government, and private businesses must remain closed.”

The statement also mandated a lockdown of all transport services, including air, sea, and land, from 6 am to 6 pm on May 30, 2024.

Exceptions include essential services like healthcare, emergency services, and journalism.

IPOB acknowledged potential threats from criminal elements and urged people to stay home to avoid attacks falsely attributed to IPOB and its Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“We do not want anyone to die or lose property. Prepare in advance for May 30th.”

The organization warned that those exploiting the event to cause harm would face consequences.

“We will remember all Biafran heroes and heroines, including international supporters like Bruce Mayrock from the USA, and notable figures such as General Phillip Efiong and Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.”

IPOB also encouraged Biafrans abroad to obtain permits for rallies and to share the history of the Biafran struggle.

“Biafra is coming. Our determination for Biafra liberation remains unwavering.”
