In response to the recent killing of five soldiers in Abia State, Governor Alex Otti has announced a N25 million bounty for information leading to the capture of the attackers.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 30, 2024, when unknown gunmen ambushed a military checkpoint at Obikabia Junction, Ogbor Hill, Aba.

The assailants killed five soldiers, seized their rifles, and set fire to two patrol vans and the checkpoint.

The Abia State government, through a statement by Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu, condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, and the Military High Command.

The government also prayed for the peaceful repose of the soldiers who died in the line of duty.

The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to security and peace, declaring the attack a serious affront to its efforts to ensure safety in the state, especially in Aba, the economic hub.

Despite significant investments to improve infrastructure and attract investments, the government vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“To underscore its resolve, the State Government is offering a N25 million reward to anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals involved in the killings,” the statement read. It assured that all information provided would be treated with confidentiality to ensure the safety and cooperation of informants.

The government also praised the professionalism of the Nigerian Army officers in Abia and encouraged them to continue showing restraint and professionalism in their duties.

Governor Otti assured residents and businesses of their safety and urged them to continue their daily activities without fear.

Citizens were also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.

The government reiterated its determination to resist any attempts to disrupt the peace and security of the state, stating that Abia would remain welcoming to law-abiding citizens and hostile to criminals.

Governor Otti’s administration is committed to collaborating with security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to gather intelligence and apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime.

The government’s message was clear: any threats to the peace and security of Abia State will be met with decisive action.
