The German government has introduced the ‘Opportunity Card,’ a new initiative designed to attract skilled workers from non-European Union (EU) countries, including Nigeria.

This card, a type of residence permit, allows individuals from third countries to enter Germany and seek employment opportunities.

The Opportunity Card is valid for up to one year and can be extended if the holder secures qualified employment.

This extension enables the individual to obtain a subsequent residence permit for continued job searching or employment.

To be eligible for the Opportunity Card, applicants must have their professional qualifications recognized in either Germany or their home country.

Additionally, they must prove they can support themselves financially during their stay, typically requiring evidence of at least €1,027 per month.

This proof can be provided through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment.

During their job search, holders of the Opportunity Card are permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours a week and engage in trial jobs for up to two weeks to evaluate potential employment opportunities.

“Proof that you will be able to support yourself for the duration of your stay in Germany can be provided in the form of a blocked account or a declaration of commitment, for example. At least 1,027 euros per month (as of 2024) are generally required,” the guidelines state.

“During your stay for the purpose of finding a job, you have the opportunity to work up to 20 hours a week in a part-time job. In addition, you can take up trial jobs for up to two weeks at a time to familiarise yourself with potential jobs.”

The Opportunity Card operates on a points-based system with specific eligibility criteria:

– Completion of a degree or at least two years of state-recognized training.
– Proficiency in German at least at level A1 or English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
– Sufficient financial means to cover living expenses for the duration of the stay in Germany.

Nigerian applicants are encouraged to liaise with Germany’s diplomatic missions in Nigeria for visa application processes.

Applicants must apply at the German mission responsible for their district of residence.

Further details and guidance can be found on the website of the relevant German mission.
