President Bola Tinubu has announced key appointments to the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), highlighting his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s environmental and economic sustainability.

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe has been named the interim Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the NCCC, pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

This decision was communicated by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.

Dr. Maduekwe, 39, is a highly qualified legal and environmental expert with a Bachelor’s degree in Law, a Master’s in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee, UK, and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Hull, UK.

She will also co-chair the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

With over 15 years of experience in climate policy and project implementation, she previously served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament, a global network of legislators addressing the climate crisis.

In addition, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, has been appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement.

He will manage climate finance and stakeholder relations at the NCCC Secretariat and serve as Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on NCMAP. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, has extensive experience in financial management, including a role as Head of Business Development at the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company PLC.

Mr. Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been named Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations.

He will lead the digitalization of procurement processes and optimize departmental procedures at the NCCC Secretariat.

Fagbuji, a policy analyst and computer scientist, has served as Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters and as Technical Adviser to the NCCC Director-General on Policy Research and Strategy.

These appointments are effective immediately and are intended to bolster Nigeria’s green industrial development and climate action efforts.

President Tinubu expects the new leaders to drive sustainable growth and national prosperity through their expertise and dedication.
