President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam on her re-election as a judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term.

Justice Anukam secured her re-election during the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana, on Friday.

Justice Anukam, a distinguished Nigerian jurist, earned her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1984 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985.

In addition to her legal qualifications, she is a chartered secretary, chartered arbitrator, and experienced administrator.

She has previously served as the Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja and as the Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

President Tinubu praised Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to human rights jurisprudence in Africa and encouraged her to continue sharing her extensive knowledge and insights with the African Court.

He emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting the candidatures of capable and qualified Nigerians for international roles, highlighting Nigeria’s strategic importance on the global stage.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states to protect human and peoples’ rights across the continent, works in conjunction with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court comprises eleven judges nominated by AU member states and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Nigeria, a state party to the Protocol establishing the court, ratified it in 2004.
