A senior accounting officer in the Education Department of Damboa Local Government Area, Shettima Mustapha, was killed in a bomb explosion on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu expressway.

The explosion, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, also resulted in serious injuries to several others, including one victim who had a leg amputated.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon while military and security operatives were escorting hundreds of motorists and passengers from Damboa to Maiduguri.

This tragic event follows an attack by multiple female suicide bombers in Gwoza Local Government Area last month, which left 32 people dead and about 100 injured.

The Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road, long known for its dangers due to terrorist activity, was recently reopened by the military.

However, access is limited to residents of Damboa and parts of Chibok, forcing people from Biu to take a longer, 300-kilometer route through Biu-Buni Yadi-Damaturu-Maiduguri to reach the state capital.

A close associate of Mustapha, who requested anonymity for security reasons, confirmed the news: “I am deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of our beloved accountant, Shettima Mustapha, in a tragic bomb blast on his way from Damboa to Maiduguri today. Our hearts are heavy with grief at this loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”

Reliable sources reported that Mustapha’s remains were buried on Tuesday according to Islamic rites. The injured are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri.
