The Ahani Achi Development Union (ADU) in Oji River Local Government Area, Enugu State, has called on the state and federal governments, along with representatives from Enugu West Senatorial District, to invest in developmental projects within the Oji River Urban forest reserves.
This appeal comes as a strategic measure to tackle the rising insecurity in the area, including kidnapping and criminal activities.

The forest reserves, which stretch from Oji River Urban to the Ahani Achi community, were originally established through an agreement between the host community and the defunct Nigerian Coal Corporation.
Over seven miles of land were leased to the corporation for the planting of Gmelina trees, which supported coal mining activities in Enugu.
Historically, Oji River played a significant role in the development of the Eastern region, as the coal mined in Enugu powered the Oji River Thermal Power Station, which provided electricity to the region.

The British colonial administration acquired land from Ahani Achi for the plantation of Gmelina trees, a critical resource in the coal mining industry. The area was well-maintained until the 1970s when coal mining declined.
In light of increasing security challenges, the ADU is urging the government to revitalize the forest reserves by siting developmental projects within the area.
During a visit by officials from the Enugu State Ministry of Forestry, led by Director Basil Okafor Osinachi, the union emphasized the importance of investing in the forests to promote economic growth and reduce crime.

Hon. Kingsley Ezeh, President General of the ADU, stressed that such investments would not only address insecurity but also unlock the economic potential of Oji River Urban, including its natural resources like the Oji River stream.
He commended Governor Peter Mbah for his efforts in securing the release of students from Enugu State College of Health Technology, which is located near the forest reserves, but emphasized the need for further development to prevent future incidents.

The ADU is also seeking collaboration with representatives from the National Assembly, including Senator Osita Ngwu and Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, urging them to consider siting their constituency projects in the Oji River forests.
They believe that these projects will enhance security and foster sustainable development in the area.
