The Makurdi Catholic Diocese has strongly criticized students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (formerly Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi) for the inappropriate use of Catholic clerical robes during a school event.
The students reportedly donned the sacred attire as part of a drama to celebrate their sign-out from the university, which has sparked outrage on social media.

“This act demonstrates a gross disregard for the Catholic faith and everything it represents. It is a direct affront to the respected image of Reverend Sisters, who maintain modesty in their appearance to glorify God,” the statement read.
CAMPAN further emphasized that any use of clerical robes for artistic or dramatic purposes should faithfully reflect the original context and not distort or mock religious symbols.
The association also questioned the university’s role in allowing such an event, accusing the institution of failing to educate students on the sensitivity of religious matters.

The media group, made up of Catholic journalists and practitioners, expressed disappointment that the university allowed its students to engage in what they termed “indecent behavior” that undermines the values of the Catholic Church.
They called on the university to take immediate steps to address the issue and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
CAMPAN concluded by reminding the public that while freedom of expression is important, it should not infringe on the respect for others’ beliefs, especially when it involves religious symbols.
