The federal government has announced that it is actively monitoring and analyzing seismic activity in Abuja following recent earth tremors in the federal capital territory.

Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology, made this announcement during an emergency press briefing in Abuja.

He assured that the government is preparing to implement measures to mitigate any potential seismic risks.

In the past week, tremors have been reported in Maitama, Katampe, and Mpape areas, raising concerns among local residents.

Earth tremors, which involve small vibrations of the ground due to minor movements in the earth’s crust, have recently caused alarm with loud noises and noticeable ground shaking.

Nnaji highlighted that the government is analyzing data from Seismological and GNSS stations to provide recommendations to the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

He urged residents, particularly in Mpape and surrounding areas, to remain calm and continue with their daily activities.

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) also advised the public to stay calm. Prof. Olusegun Ige, NGSA’s Director General, stated that while the tremors have been minor and generally harmless, the agency is closely monitoring the situation and will issue updates as needed.

A team from NGSA has conducted an on-the-ground assessment of the affected areas to evaluate the incidents.

Residents are reassured that there is no immediate threat, and authorities are working to address any concerns regarding the seismic activity.
