Members of the Enu-Egu autonomous community in Ndiagu Akpugo, Nkanu West LGA, on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest voicing their concerns over the alleged imposition of a traditional ruler and town union leadership in their community.

Recently carved out from Ugwuafor community, the Enu-Egu residents assert that no elections were held to validate the self-acclaimed leadership and that community leaders were not consulted in the decision-making process.

The protest, which commenced at Michael Okpara Square, concluded at the Ministry of Chieftaincy, Rural Development, and Local Government Matters, following stops at the State House of Assembly and the Government House.

Chief Barr. John Amechi Edeh, addressing the press outside the Government House, appealed to the state government to intervene and restore peace in Enu-Egu.

“We are calling on the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, to help us restore peace and unity in our dear community. We believe he is a man of peace who would not support any form of discrimination. That is why we chose to follow due process rather than resort to violence,” Edeh stated.

Other community leaders who spoke to newsmen during the protest included former councilor for Akpugo Ward 4, Hon. Gabriel Edeh, Chief Simon Okonkwo Edeh, and Chief Amos Eneani, among others.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the State Assembly, Engr. Edeh Magnus, member representing Aninri state constituency, noted that the Assembly would not tolerate actions that jeopardize peace and stability, assuring that the issue would be urgently addressed.

On his part, Enugu Commissioner for Chieftaincy, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, assured the protesters that the government would expedite investigations to ensure justice is served in the matter.

Chief Ogbodo urged those causing confusion in the community to allow peace to reign for the overall interest of the state.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions such as “The imposition of Sylvester Nnaji is targeted at communal discrimination” among others.
