The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has confirmed the tragic death of Chiamaka Ozoigbondu, a student from Peaceland College, Enugu, who was involved in a fatal road accident on the IMT campus on Monday, September 30, 2024.

In an official statement, the Institute expressed its deep condolences to the family of the deceased and those affected by the loss.

The statement read, “Our prayer is that such an incident does not occur again.”

Following an emergency joint Management and Academic Board meeting held on October 2, 2024, the school made several decisions regarding the incident.

As a mark of respect, all ongoing exams were immediately suspended, and a three-day mourning period from Wednesday, October 2, to Friday, October 3, 2024, was declared for the staff and students of the institution in honor of Chiamaka.

The statement added that the IMT Management is working closely with security agencies and the deceased’s family to ensure that “justice is done and seen to be done in this matter.”

Several measures have been instituted to prevent future tragedies. The Institute has banned all forms of celebrations after exams within its premises.

“Students who wish to celebrate after their exams can do so outside IMT premises,” the statement declared, warning that “students found celebrating within the Institute will face expulsion, and no amount of pressure will make IMT rescind it.”

Additionally, a new speed limit of 20 km per hour has been set for all vehicles on campus. Violators of this rule will face arrest and will be handed over to law enforcement.

The statement further stressed that “law enforcement officers should not escort students into IMT for any reason,” as their presence hinders the work of campus security personnel.

IMT has also introduced new examination protocols, requiring all students to wear their departmental uniforms and ID cards during exams, which will be conducted under strict supervision.

Furthermore, the statement confirmed that the two other students injured in the incident are receiving appropriate medical care.
