Gunmen ambushed and killed two police officers in Nnewi-North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday.

The officers were part of a team deployed by the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, to investigate a crime in the Uruagu area.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack, explaining that the officers were ambushed by a criminal gang who opened fire upon sighting the police team.

The assailants also detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in the police vehicle, which subsequently caught fire.

Sadly, two of the officers lost their lives during the attack.

Following the incident, CP Itam ordered a manhunt to track down the fleeing gunmen. The police have urged the public, particularly eyewitnesses, to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators. Confidentiality is assured for anyone who provides useful details.

Ikenga stated, “Joint security forces have begun operations to track down the armed men responsible for the deaths of the two police operatives. We call on members of the public to assist with information to aid in the manhunt.”
