Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu has announced that starting from the 2025-2026 academic session, all lecturers must hold a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) as the minimum qualification for teaching positions.
This decision was revealed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, during a “Spiritual Retreat” organized for academic and senior administrative staff.

Anieke emphasized that lecturers with qualifications below a Ph.D must upgrade or risk losing their positions, as the university aligns with the National Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines.
He also noted that graduate assistants would no longer be allowed to teach classes independently, except in the presence of qualified lecturers.

The vice-chancellor urged staff to take mentorship programs seriously and warned against misuse of these opportunities.
He also stressed that the university management would no longer tolerate lecturers missing their classes.
Prof. MarySylvia Nwachukwu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), expressed concern over poor attendance by lecturers during the first week of academic activities.

She added that the university’s academic monitorship committee would increase supervision to identify and address absenteeism among staff.
In his reflection during the retreat, the guest speaker, Rev. Fr. Liberatus Isife, emphasized that the success of any educational institution depends on the quality of knowledge imparted to students.
He encouraged staff to commit to personal development and regularly update their lecture materials, urging them to embrace positive change and greater responsibility.
