Major General Olufemi Oluyede will officially take on the role of Acting Chief of Army Staff starting Friday, November 1.
His appointment follows President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on Wednesday, as the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, remains unavailable due to health issues.

This decision has sparked discussions, particularly after the Defence Headquarters previously asserted that the position of Acting Chief of Army Staff is not recognized under the Harmonised Armed Forces Act.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, emphasized this point on October 21, following misinformation regarding Lagbaja’s health circulated by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s aide, Jackson Ude, who claimed Lagbaja had succumbed to cancer.
