Dr. Tunji Alausa, Nigeria’s new Minister of Education, has announced the abolition of the 18-year age limit for admission into tertiary institutions across the country.

In his first ministerial press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, Alausa also signaled potential changes to the country’s education policy, aiming to adapt to the evolving educational landscape.

However, he clarified that the government would not reverse its decision to invalidate over 22,700 degree certificates awarded by unaccredited universities in neighboring Togo and the Benin Republic.

Alausa emphasized the need for practical education, suggesting that it could be key to addressing Nigeria’s unemployment crisis.

He stressed that universities should not continue to produce graduates without corresponding job opportunities and stated that the government would collaborate with the private sector to offer students relevant skills and training.

Furthermore, the minister outlined plans to empower agricultural universities to embrace commercial farming practices, in a bid to tackle food insecurity in the country.
