Prominent Nigerian political scientist, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has expressed disappointment in the United States’ decision to elect Donald Trump as president, claiming that it has let down the rest of the world.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Akinyemi criticized the American electorate for choosing Trump, describing it as a “low point” for the country.
Trump, who secured victory over Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, has drawn significant global scrutiny.
Akinyemi voiced concerns about Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding his strong alliances with Russia and Israel, warning that nations like Ukraine and Palestine could face greater challenges under his leadership.
“Look at how far America has fallen. It has disgraced itself,” Akinyemi said.
“The world is disappointed by the decision it made last night.”
He also expressed concern about the potential consequences of Trump’s rhetoric becoming reality.
Akinyemi suggested that Trump could take drastic actions, such as sending U.S. troops to target America’s perceived enemies and ramping up deportations of immigrants, with severe consequences for those who return.
He also referenced the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center, noting that while previous Democratic administrations, including Biden’s, had sought to shut it down, Republican opposition has kept it open.
