The Federal Government has suspended 13 students involved in the violent assault of a senior secondary student at the Federal Government College (FGC), Enugu.
The suspension, lasting six weeks, comes as authorities investigate the disturbing incident that raised concerns about student safety at the institution.
According to a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education, the assault occurred on November 7, 2024, when a group of students ganged up on a day student in Senior Secondary 1.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video of the attack was shared on social media.
In response, the Ministry of Education set up a disciplinary committee to look into the matter. Pending the committee’s findings, the 13 students involved in the assault have been temporarily suspended.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment in all federal schools. He reassured parents and the public that the situation would be thoroughly addressed.
The Ministry has instructed the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to cooperate with law enforcement in investigating the incident further, including examining any possible links to external groups.
In addition, immediate steps have been taken to improve security at the school, with a review of safety protocols and increased law enforcement presence.
As part of the response to the incident, the Ministry also announced plans to provide counseling and rehabilitation services for both the victims and the students involved in the assault.
This initiative aims to restore a positive school climate and promote the reintegration of all affected students.
Dr. Alausa called on all stakeholders, parents, school officials, and security agencies to work together to ensure a safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment for all students at FGC Enugu.
