The leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has stated that the successful delivery of ongoing infrastructure projects by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, will play a pivotal role in shaping the voting behavior of the Igbo electorate in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ohanaeze emphasized that the Igbo people would base their voting decisions not on party affiliations, but on the tangible results of governance and the sincerity of leadership.
The group, represented by its Secretary-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, praised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for breaking away from the historical pattern of neglect and marginalization of the Southeast.
“For the first time in many years, the federal government is prioritizing infrastructure in the Southeast, particularly through the rehabilitation and construction of critical road networks that have long been neglected,” the statement read.
“This marks a major shift from the past two decades, where federal investments were either scarce or non-existent, leading to deteriorating roads and dangerous conditions that hindered the region’s growth and safety.”
Highlighting specific projects, Ohanaeze noted the approval of vital road constructions such as the Makurdi-Nsukka, Night Mile-Enugu, and Calabar-Ikot Ekpene expressways, along with efforts to improve the Anambra-Kogi Interstate, Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt, and Ohafia-Arochukwu routes.
These projects, the group said, are tangible evidence of a federal commitment to addressing the long-standing infrastructural deficits in the region.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo acknowledged Senator Umahi’s central role in pushing these projects forward, describing his efforts as crucial to restoring confidence in governance.
“His proactive leadership and dedication over the past 14 months have breathed new life into our region, and this will influence how the Igbo people vote in 2027,” the group stated.
The organization also reaffirmed its advocacy for the restructuring of Nigeria, including the creation of a sixth state in the Southeast, but emphasized that the infrastructural developments spearheaded by Umahi should not go unrecognized.
According to Ohanaeze, these advancements demonstrate the type of leadership needed to drive the region’s development and empowerment.
“As Igbo voters, we are more determined than ever to ensure that our votes reflect tangible achievements and responsible governance,” said the statement.
“We will base our decisions on concrete progress, fairness, and the pursuit of unity and equity for all Nigerians.”
