The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially named Enugu State as the host for the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, marking a significant milestone for the state.
Enugu emerged as the top contender in a highly competitive bidding process, securing the honor of hosting the prestigious sports event for the first time since the festival’s inception in 1973.
The selection of Enugu promises to enhance the legacy of the festival, which has been a symbol of excellence and national unity.
The state is expected to deliver a world-class event that will bring together athletes from across Nigeria to compete, showcase talent, and celebrate sportsmanship.
The National Sports Festival is a biennial multi-sport competition that gathers athletes from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
It serves as a platform for talent identification and promotes national unity through sports.
Before Enugu takes its turn in hosting the festival, the 22nd edition is scheduled to take place in January 2025 in Ogun State.
Preparations are already underway, with Ogun buzzing in anticipation of the upcoming event.
Hon. Bukola Olapade, Director-General of the NSC and former chairman of the local organizing committee, confirmed that the 22nd edition of the festival will feature over 15,000 athletes.
He emphasized the NSC’s commitment to ensuring a top-notch tournament in Ogun State, following the success of the 21st edition held in Asaba, Delta State, which saw the participation of more than 11,000 athletes.
