Taraba State University (TSU) has been plunged into mourning following the sudden deaths of three senior lecturers in a span of three days.
The deceased include Prof. Akporido Samuel, former Head of the Department of Chemical Sciences, who tragically collapsed and passed away in his office on Thursday; Dr. Kiliobas Sha’a, the former Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, who died at home after battling high blood pressure; and Dr. Ibrahim Saleh Bali, who succumbed to a prolonged illness early on Sunday at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo.
The unexpected deaths have sparked concern and anxiety among both academic and non-academic staff at the university.
Reports indicate that the lecturers had been advocating for improved welfare and better pay from the state government, but their requests had yet to be addressed.
Dr. Mbave Joshua, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at TSU, expressed his grief over the tragic loss and voiced concerns about the harsh working conditions faced by faculty members.
He highlighted the financial struggles due to the rising cost of living and the lack of adequate support for staff members.
