The World Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed the reappointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as its Director-General for a second term.
Okonjo-Iweala, 70, had expressed her desire to continue in the role back in September. Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the WTO General Council, announced that no other nominations had been received by the 8th November deadline.
The WTO officially confirmed her reappointment via a brief post on social media platform X on Friday, stating that the reappointment would take effect on September 1, 2025.
The announcement noted: “Breaking: the General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. More details to follow.”
Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment comes after a successful consensus process among the WTO’s 166 member countries, a process she navigated with determination despite earlier challenges.
