President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her re-election as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, made history in 2021 when she became the first African and first woman to lead the WTO, which has 164 member nations.
Her first term as Director-General is set to end on August 31, 2025, with her second term beginning on September 1.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed that Okonjo-Iweala’s unanimous reappointment for a second term reflects the international community’s confidence in her leadership.
He emphasized that her continued role will help drive multilateral trade and contribute to global sustainable development.
Tinubu also noted that Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership would further solidify the WTO’s role in fostering inclusive global economic growth and governance.
As a committed supporter of the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria, under Tinubu’s leadership, will continue to back the WTO’s mission to promote fair and equitable trade practices worldwide.
The President assured Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering support as she works on consolidating her reforms and promoting international cooperation in global trade.
