A group of armed herdsmen on Saturday, launched a violent attack on the rice-farming community of Oji-egu in Obinagu Uwani Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.
The attackers, wielding machetes, stormed the farmlands around 3 pm and began destroying crops, including a 35-hectare rice farm owned by prominent farmers Ekene Uzodinma and Nathaniel Ogbuka.
During the chaos, local farmer, Maduabuchi Onah was injured by a machete wound, and Chidera Nwankwo, a young lady, narrowly escaped being stabbed to death by the herdsmen.
Despite the violence, the workers on the farm bravely fought back and were able to overpower the attackers.
In the process, they captured one of the herdsmen and seized one of the cows.
DAILY GAZETTE gathered that the captured herdsman and the seized cow were handed over to the Agbani Police Station, where they are currently being detained.
Uzodinma, one of the farm owners, expressed gratitude for the workers’ bravery and urged the authorities to take swift action against the perpetrators.
“We are thankful that our workers were able to defend themselves and apprehend one of the attackers. We call on the authorities to ensure justice and improve security in our community,” he said.
