A tragic stampede at a funfair held at Islamic High School in Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, has resulted in the deaths of 35 minors.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday, has sparked widespread condemnation, including from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde promised to investigate the incident thoroughly and hold those responsible accountable.

He also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

The following day, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed that seven individuals had been arrested in connection with the disaster.

Among those detained is Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, who was identified as the primary sponsor of the event. Other arrested individuals include the school’s principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, and five others.

Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso stated that the arrested suspects include:

Additionally, six people were reported injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Osifeso confirmed that the investigation has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, where it is being led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

He reassured the public that the police would increase patrols to maintain safety and prevent any further disturbances.

The authorities vowed to continue their investigation to ensure that justice is served for the victims of this horrific incident.
