The Enugu State House of Assembly has raised serious concerns about the land acquisition process for the Centenary City project, citing discrepancies in the documentation related to the acquisition.
Based on an investigation by its Special Committee on Lands, headed by Iloabuchi Aniagu, the Assembly found that the acquisition of the 1,000-hectare land was carried out without following proper procedures and adequate consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The committee also pointed out that the Amechi and Obeagu communities, who both claim the land as their ancestral property, were largely excluded from the process.
The land in question was reportedly encroached upon by Private Estates International West Africa Ltd (PEIWA) without sufficient negotiations or involvement of the affected communities.
The Assembly urged the state government to intervene and resolve the ongoing dispute between the two communities in Enugu South Local Government Area.
It further appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to establish a high-powered panel to address the grievances and ensure transparency and fairness in the administration of land in the state.
