The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, which claimed the lives of several individuals.

The incident occurred during a palliative distribution event organized by the church to assist struggling residents.

In a statement, Kaigama conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic event.

The statement reads: “With profound shock and sadness, I, on behalf of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, mourn the tragic loss of life and injuries sustained at the food-sharing event organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Trinity Parish, Maitama, Abuja.”

The Archbishop described the tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of over ten people, as a “devastating blow” to the community.

He acknowledged the selfless work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in supporting the poor and vulnerable, calling it a reflection of the Catholic Church’s mission to serve those in need.

Kaigama extended his heartfelt sympathy to the families of the deceased and the injured, praying that they find strength and solace in this difficult time.

He also called on the community to unite in prayer for the souls of the departed, for the healing of the injured, and for the comfort of all affected by the incident.

“Let us come together to pray for the eternal repose of the souls of the faithful departed, and for the swift recovery of those injured,” Kaigama said, urging everyone to keep those impacted in their prayers.
