Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has affirmed that he will support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, reiterating that he has no regrets about supporting Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State for eight years under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his continued support for Tinubu.
He emphasized that if given the chance again, he would back Tinubu’s candidacy.
Wike made this statement during a Thanksgiving service in Ahoada, Rivers State, attended by PDP members from the Ahoada East and West Local Government Areas.
“I have no regrets, I have no apologies. If the opportunity comes I will do the same thing,” Wike said, reflecting on his role in supporting Tinubu during the 2023 election, which ultimately led to Tinubu’s victory and subsequent appointment of Wike as the FCT minister.
Wike also addressed accusations of land grabbing in Abuja, which have been leveled against him by some residents.
He dismissed these allegations, explaining that as the FCT minister, he is responsible for overseeing land matters in the capital, not for unlawfully taking land.
“I am in charge of lands in Abuja, how will I go and grab what I am in charge of? We must thank Mr. President; if he did not give us this opportunity, we wouldn’t have known,” Wike said, adding that those occupying government land must adhere to proper procedures or face the consequences.
The minister further stated, “When you go to the capital, you know you are dealing with the entire Nigeria. I can assure you, no matter the cry you cry, no matter the propaganda you carry, if you like give me any name you want to give me, the right thing must be done.”
President Tinubu also praised Wike’s efforts during his tenure as FCT minister.
In a media chat earlier this week, Tinubu commended Wike’s commitment to improving Abuja, particularly his work in enforcing regulations and ensuring compliance.
Tinubu acknowledged the challenges of governance in the capital and expressed his admiration for Wike’s work.
“Nyesom Wike is a good man, he is a performing minister. Nigerians lack compliance, period!” Tinubu remarked. “We don’t pay our ground rent on time. We see compliance as inconvenience. I doff my hat for him,” Tinubu added, applauding Wike for his dedication to making necessary reforms in Abuja.
