Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away at the age of 100, his nonprofit organization, The Carter Center, announced on Sunday.

Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he had been since February 2023.

The former president, who was born in rural Georgia, became the governor of the state before serving as president from 1977 to 1981.

His presidency was marked by both achievements and challenges, including the Camp David Accords, which secured a historic peace agreement between Israel and Egypt.

However, his term was also marred by the Iran hostage crisis and economic difficulties, leading to his loss to Ronald Reagan in the 1980 election.

Carter spent his post-presidency years focused on humanitarian efforts, founding The Carter Center in 1982, which aimed to promote peace and human rights globally.

His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Even after his presidency, Carter remained active in international diplomacy, election monitoring, and public service, long after his term in office.

Known for his strong Christian faith, Carter continued teaching Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains until his 90s.

He had been in ill health for several years, battling brain cancer since 2015.

Carter’s son, Chip Carter, expressed admiration for his father’s legacy, calling him a hero and an advocate for peace and love.

He died peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

Carter, who outlived all previous US presidents, is remembered for his tireless post-presidential work and his enduring commitment to justice and peace.

He is survived by his children and his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023.
