Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep regret and extended condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State over the tragic deaths of about 10 civilians in an airstrike targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on December 25, 2024, during an operation by the Nigerian Air Force aimed at destroying the logistics base of the insurgents.

The attack, part of ongoing military efforts to combat terrorism, left several civilians dead and others injured.

Nigerian Air Force spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa clarified that the airstrike was based on credible intelligence and confirmatory aerial surveillance, but he also acknowledged reports of civilian casualties and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima expressed his sorrow for the civilian deaths and the pain caused to the victims’ families.

He referred to the incident as one of the rare moments when innocent lives are caught in the crossfire of military operations aimed at eradicating terrorism.

“We are deeply sorry and dismayed by the civilian casualties incurred during this operation,” Shettima said.

“This is a tragic moment, and my heartfelt sympathies go to the families affected. We recognize the immense pain caused, but I call for understanding given the context of our armed forces’ sacrifices to protect the lives of civilians.”

The Vice President also expressed his condolences to the people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives.

He praised the bravery of the military forces, stating that they were paying the ultimate price to safeguard the nation from terrorism.

“I send my prayers and thoughts to the families who lost their loved ones. May God grant you the strength to cope with this painful loss,” he added.

On behalf of the military, Shettima apologized for the tragic loss of civilian lives and urged the public to continue supporting the armed forces in their efforts to combat terrorism.

He emphasized that with accurate intelligence, military operations could be more precise in distinguishing between terrorists and innocent civilians.

“With your continued support, we can ensure the safety of all Nigerians and eliminate the last remnants of terrorism in the country,” Shettima said.

“President Tinubu’s administration is committed to creating a peaceful environment where Nigerians can work and live without fear of terrorism.”

In related news, Vice President Shettima also visited Jigawa State to convey condolences to Governor Alhaji Umar Namadi, who recently lost both his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi.

Shettima, accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State and other officials, expressed his sorrow over the double loss.

Reflecting on the inevitability of death, Shettima reminded those present that life is temporary, and everyone must face the ultimate destiny.
