John Mahama was officially sworn in as Ghana’s president on Tuesday, marking the beginning of his second term in office.

The ceremony took place at Independence Square in Accra, Ghana’s capital, and was attended by dignitaries and world leaders.

Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2016, returned to the presidency after winning the December 2024 election.

He takes over from Nana Akufo-Addo, who succeeded him in 2017.

Before Mahama’s swearing-in, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as the country’s first female vice president.

The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, administered the oath of office during the event.

Mahama and his running mate, Opoku-Agyemang, won the election with a significant margin, receiving 50% of the vote.

Mahama secured 6.3 million votes, defeating Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by a margin of 1.7 million votes.

Bawumia, the former vice president, conceded defeat immediately after the results were announced and called Mahama to congratulate him.

Mahama’s return to office comes with a mission to address Ghana’s struggling economy, a challenge he vowed to tackle during his campaign.

The election result reflected a desire for change among the Ghanaian people, which Mahama acknowledged with humility, stating, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility.”
