President Bola Tinubu has approved a comprehensive new retirement package for retiring military chiefs and generals, which includes a range of benefits such as a $20,000 annual medical allowance for foreign treatment, bulletproof vehicles, and domestic staff.

This move follows the signing of the Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service for Officers and Enlisted Personnel in the Nigerian Armed Forces (HTACOS) on December 14, 2024.

Under the new package, retiring Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) and service chiefs will be entitled to a bulletproof SUV, which will be replaced every four years and maintained by the military.

They will also receive a Peugeot 508 or an equivalent vehicle as a backup, along with a generous staff arrangement that includes five domestic aides (two cooks, two stewards, and a gardener), a security officer or aide-de-camp, a special or personal assistant, three drivers, and a service orderly.

The package also covers escorts, as needed, and the retention of personal firearms.

In addition to the bulletproof vehicles, the military chiefs will enjoy free medical care both within Nigeria and abroad.

For lieutenant generals and their equivalents, the retirement package includes two Toyota Hilux vehicles or one Toyota Land Cruiser, an annual medical allowance of $20,000, two cooks, two stewards, four residential guards, two drivers, and a service orderly.

The benefits are as follows for other ranks:

Major Generals/Brigadier Generals: A Toyota Land Cruiser or equivalent, $15,000 for medical treatment annually, domestic staff, and residential guards.

Brigadier Generals (One-Star Officers): A Toyota Camry or equivalent, $10,000 for medical treatment annually, and similar domestic and security arrangements.

Colonels: A Toyota Corolla or equivalent and free medical care within Nigeria.
