Police officers were stationed at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, as both Samuel Anyawu, the contested National Secretary of the party, and Ude Okoye, whom the Court of Appeal recognized as the legitimate National Secretary, were expected to resume work.
Our correspondent reported that tensions were high at the secretariat, as both factions prepared for the arrival of their respective secretaries.
Anyawu and Okoye are both claiming the position of the party’s National Secretary, which has sparked conflict within the PDP.
A light police presence was noted at the headquarters, along with supporters of both Anyawu and Okoye.
Despite the tension, Anyawu arrived at the party office and proceeded to his office, where his supporters greeted him enthusiastically.
Inside his office, Anyawu held a brief prayer session before addressing journalists.
When asked about the court ruling, Anyawu explained that the matter is still under appeal and has now been taken to the Supreme Court.
Regarding the party’s recent acknowledgment of Okoye as National Secretary, he referred to the national publicity secretary’s statement as merely his personal opinion.
The dispute over the position arose after Anyawu contested the Imo State governorship election, which he lost.
Upon his return to the party, Okoye, who had temporarily taken over during Anyawu’s absence, challenged Anyawu’s right to resume the position.
The Court of Appeal ruled in Okoye’s favor, and the PDP National Working Committee subsequently recognized him as the legitimate National Secretary, respecting the court’s decision.
