Two Reverend Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Mother of Christ in Onitsha, Anambra State, who were kidnapped on January 7, 2025, have regained their freedom.
Sisters Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Grace Mariette Okoli were released by their abductors without any ransom being paid.
Sister Maria Sobenna Ikeotuonye, the IHM Secretary, confirmed the release in a statement on Monday, expressing joy and gratitude. She shared that both sisters were in good health upon their release.
The statement read, “We are pleased to inform you that our dear Sisters have been unconditionally released and are in good health. We thank God and appreciate everyone for their prayers and support during these trying times.”
In another development, a judge of the Anambra State High Court, who was abducted on January 11, 2025, at the entrance to his home in Awka, was freed the following evening.
His release was met with widespread celebration as friends and well-wishers gathered to give thanks.
However, the situation remains tense for Hon. Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha North 1 constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Azuka, who was kidnapped on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, is still in captivity, with no word on his whereabouts despite his vehicle being found abandoned at Upper Iweka, Onitsha.
His case has raised ongoing concerns as the search for him continues.
