Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has urged over 200 students sponsored by the state government to study in the United Kingdom to avoid following the controversial path of Simon Ekpa, a former scholarship recipient who turned against the nation.
Speaking at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Ezza South local government area on Saturday, Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of upholding the state’s reputation while pursuing academic excellence.
He flagged off the state scholarship scheme, which is expected to benefit 8,000 Ebonyi residents before the end of his administration.
During his address, the governor reminded the students that they carry the responsibility of being ambassadors of Ebonyi State.
“Your actions, words, and achievements will reflect not only on you but on our collective identity as Ebonyi people,” he stated, stressing the need for them to remain focused and dedicated to their studies.
Nwifuru warned the students not to be swayed by the allure of luxury abroad, urging them to stay committed to their academic goals.
He said, “Your case must be different from that of Simon Ekpa, who, instead of reciprocating the gesture of sending him abroad for a scholarship, turned around to constitute himself a nuisance to the country.”
The governor also stressed that the students should graduate within the expected time frame, return promptly to contribute to the development of Ebonyi, and set a positive example for future beneficiaries of the state’s scholarship scheme.
Nwifuru expressed confidence in the students’ potential and urged them to remain motivated by the aspirations of the people of Ebonyi, ensuring that their success abroad would ultimately benefit the state.
