A Republican congressman has introduced a bill aimed at allowing U.S. President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office, despite the constitutional limitation that restricts presidents to two terms.

Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee put forward the resolution on Thursday, which calls for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to read: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times.” Currently, the 22nd Amendment prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice.

Ogles, who is part of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives, argued that Trump is uniquely qualified to restore America to greatness.

He stated that the former president “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing America’s decay.”

“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” Ogles said.

“We must support him in correcting the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”

The bill comes after Trump’s second inauguration, during which he signed several significant executive orders related to issues like energy policy, gender identity, and the southern border.

Ogles praised these actions, emphasizing Trump’s leadership and commitment to his vision for America.

Trump had previously dismissed the idea of running for a third term but hinted at the possibility following his win in the 2024 presidential race.

“I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something,” he quipped to Republican lawmakers. “Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out.’”

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, limits U.S. presidents to two terms to prevent any leader from holding power too long.

The amendment was introduced in the wake of President Franklin Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, which lasted from 1933 to 1945 until his death in office.

This provision was designed to prevent any future president from accumulating too much power and potentially establishing a dictatorial regime.
