A deadly dynamite explosion in Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, has claimed the life of one resident and left six others injured.

The incident occurred around 7:30 am on Sunday, January 26, 2025, when dynamites stored by a suspect for mining purposes detonated, causing severe damage.

The explosion destroyed approximately 12 houses in the area.

The victim, identified as Fatima Sadauki, died at the scene, while the injured were transported to Kainji General Hospital for treatment.

Niger State Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the tragedy and mentioned that the Commissioner of Police, Shawulu Danmamman, has launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit was deployed to assess the damage.

The suspect, who stored the dynamite in the residential area, is currently on the run.

The police assured that the situation in the area has been brought under control, with continuous monitoring to prevent any further incidents.
