Governor Sule,

The World Bank, through its Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) initiative, has partnered with the Nasarawa State government to combat soil erosion in Lafia, Doma, and Toto local government areas (LGAs) by signing a N10 billion contract with Bauhaus Global/ICCO and GET Engineering.

The agreement, which was finalized in Lafia, the state capital, is aimed at addressing the effects of climate change, specifically focusing on soil erosion and stormwater management.

Dr. Napoleon Elias-Gyobe, the ACReSAL Project Coordinator in Nasarawa, shared details of the project after the signing, emphasizing its importance in tackling environmental challenges in the state.

Elias-Gyobe commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for his commitment to the ACReSAL project, which he said reflects the governor’s dedication to addressing climate change issues.

The contract was awarded to two responsive bidders, with the project divided into two lots.

Lot 1, covering Lafia and Doma, is valued at approximately N6.18 billion, while Lot 2, covering Toto, has a contract sum of N3.43 billion, bringing the total to nearly N10 billion.

The project is expected to deliver significant benefits to the residents of Nasarawa State, with a focus on effective management of stormwater and soil erosion.

In addition to the project’s environmental goals, Elias-Gyobe noted that a compensation plan for those affected by the project had already begun.

Compensation totaling N2.4 billion has been allocated for affected residents in Lafia and Doma, while N744 million has been earmarked for residents of Toto.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within 12 months, while the second phase will take approximately 18 months due to the size of the gully erosion site.

Muhammad Garba-Rosha, Chairman of the ACReSAL Project Steering Committee, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, assured that the Nasarawa State government would ensure the timely completion of the project, which he said would not only address erosion but also help prevent flooding and enhance food security in all 13 LGAs of the state.

Engr. Nizar Ibrehim, representing the contracting firms, pledged to deliver high-quality work within the stipulated timeframe.
