Bayero University Kano (BUK) is preparing to graduate 8,769 students at its 39th convocation ceremony, with 176 students achieving first-class degrees.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Abbas, made this announcement, stating that the event will take place over four days, from Wednesday to Saturday in February 2025.
As part of the ceremony, BUK will also confer the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor on three distinguished retired scholars: Professor Garba Azare, Professor Julius Falola, and Professor Musa Borodo.
According to Professor Abbas, “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, it is with great pleasure that Bayero University Kano (BUK) announces the details of its 39th Convocation Ceremony.”
He further noted, “This event marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of our students, and we are excited to celebrate their achievements with you.”
Providing a breakdown of the program, Professor Abbas stated that on the first day, Wednesday, February 12, a total of 4,402 students from 11 faculties will receive their degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
On the second day, Thursday, February 13, “We shall see another 4,367 graduands from 7 faculties graduating. The highlights include: 176 First Class degrees, 275 PhDs, 2,590 Master’s Degrees, and 535 Postgraduate Diplomas.”
He also announced that the convocation lecture, titled Innovation and Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to National Development, will be chaired by the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Jeffrey Nnaji.
Regarding the final day of the event, Professor Abbas stated, “On day four, we will confer Honorary Degrees on two distinguished Nigerians: Col. Sani Bello (Rtd) and Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, popularly known as A A Rano.”
He emphasized that BUK does not award honorary degrees indiscriminately but strictly recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to humanity and the educational sector.
“BUK does not give an honorary degree on the basis of selling it but strictly based on the contribution of such personalities to humanity and to the educational sector,” he explained.
He highlighted the contributions of Colonel Sani Bello, a former governor of Kano State, who played a significant role in the socio-economic development of the state.
Additionally, he noted that Alhaji A. A. Rano has provided financial assistance to many students by paying their registration fees and continues to support them with N60,000 in financial aid.
He further revealed that no fewer than 7,000 people receive salaries from A A Rano, which aligns with the university’s criteria for awarding him the honorary degree.
The convocation promises to be a momentous occasion, celebrating academic excellence and recognizing individuals who have significantly impacted society.
