The U.S. Secret Service shot a man during an armed confrontation near the White House early Sunday morning, prompting heightened security measures in the area.
The incident occurred near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW, just minutes away from the White House.
According to multiple reports, law enforcement responded swiftly to the potential threat.
Authorities had been tracking a “suicidal individual” reportedly traveling from Indiana, based on earlier alerts from D.C. police.
The man’s vehicle was later found near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is adjacent to the White House.
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi stated that when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect pulled out a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation.
“Our personnel fired shots during the encounter, but thankfully, no Secret Service agents were injured,” Guglielmi said.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, but his current condition remains unknown.
Investigations are ongoing as the Secret Service works to determine the full details of the altercation.
