President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that his decision to remove fuel subsidies was aimed at securing a better future for Nigeria’s younger and unborn generations.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and long-term national development.
“I have listened to you carefully. Today is not for long speeches, but I want to reassure you that you are the hope of this country. Every decision I make is about securing your future,” Tinubu stated.
He defended his controversial economic policies, particularly the fuel subsidy removal, explaining that it was necessary to redirect resources toward critical infrastructure and economic stability.
“When you remove oil subsidy, you are protecting the future of generations yet unborn. Many professionals talk about leaving Nigeria, but if we grow prosperity at home and empower our people, they will stay. This is your country to develop, build, and make prosperous,” he said.
Reflecting on the economic challenges his administration inherited, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s financial outlook is improving.
“When we started, things seemed uncertain and difficult, but today, the economy has turned a corner. Prices are stabilizing, investor confidence is growing, and technology is advancing. You have the opportunity to shape the future,” he told the youth representatives.
Encouraging open dialogue, he urged young Nigerians to share their concerns and ideas with him.
“Look at me in the face and tell me what you think is wrong and how you want things done. We will try to implement any suggestion that contributes to the prosperity of this country,” he assured.
While inaugurating the planning committee for the upcoming youth conference, Tinubu stressed the need for technology-driven solutions and agricultural development.
“I am with you. Let’s embrace technology, improve farming conditions, and work towards food sovereignty. I admire your youthful energy—I wish I could be young again, maybe in the next life,” he joked.
In his remarks, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, highlighted that the youth conference aims to foster meaningful engagement between young people and the government.
He described Tinubu’s administration as one that listens and is open to incorporating youth-driven ideas into governance.
Samson Itodo, a lead member of the committee and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, commended the President for recognizing the importance of youth in national development.
The committee comprises representatives from key government ministries, civil society organizations, NGOs, and international partners, including the World Bank, all working towards a conference that will drive positive change for Nigerian youth.
