The Chairman of the Joint Campus Council (JCC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Enugu State chapter, Comrade Cajetan Ali, has been suspended from office.
The suspension, backed by Eight out of Fourteen elected state executive members, was based on allegations of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.
In a statement released on Friday with the title: “Vote of No confidence on the NANS JCC chairman Enugu State” and made available to DAILY GAZETTE, the executive council outlined the reasons for his suspension:
“Following a thorough review of your leadership conduct and financial management, the Executive Council has resolved to suspend you from office with immediate effect, pending further investigation into the following grave concerns:
“1. Lack of Financial Accountability: Despite multiple requests, you have failed to provide any financial report or transparency in fund management. The Financial Secretary and Treasurer have been completely sidelined, leaving you in sole control of funds without any oversight.”
“1. (a) Christmas Gifts from the Governor: ₦1 million and bags of rice were donated, yet only ₦10,000 per executive was disbursed without any explanation of the remaining funds.”
“1. (b) General Funds: No structured financial reporting has been provided, raising serious concerns about mismanagement.”
“2. Refusal to Open an Official Account: Despite repeated calls for the creation of an official bank account for transparency, you deliberately refused, leading to personal handling of funds without institutional oversight. This has created an avenue for financial misappropriation.”
“3. Exclusion of Executives in Decision-Making: You have consistently sidelined executive members in key decisions. A recent example is the courtesy visit to the DSS office, where non-executives were prioritized over elected officials, undermining the leadership structure.”
“4. Failure to Uphold Leadership Integrity: Your actions have disregarded the principles of collective leadership and financial accountability, which are fundamental to the success of this administration.”
“5. Deliberate Exclusion of Executives in Convention Planning: During the preparation for our recent convention, you intentionally locked out the entire executive body from the planning process. No prior discussions were held on logistics, responsibilities, or budgeting, leading to disorganization and inefficiency.”
“In the light of these findings and in accordance with the principles of transparency and accountability, the Executive Council hereby suspends you from office with immediate effect pending a full investigation and audit of all financial transactions under your administration.”
“You are advised to hand over all financial records, official documents, and administrative responsibilities to the Vice Chairman and Financial Secretary within 48 hours. Failure to comply will result in further disciplinary action.”
“This decision is in the best interest of NANS JCC, ensuring that the association is governed with fairness, accountability, and integrity.” the statement concluded.
