Twelve inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, following a jailbreak that occurred early Monday morning.

Sources within the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident, which resulted in the death of one officer.

Speaking on the development, the National Spokesman of the Service, Abubakar Umar, verified the escape and noted that all the inmates involved were Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATI).

However, two of them have already been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining ten.

“Two of the inmates in our custody at the Koton Karfe medium custodial centre have escaped. They are all on awaiting trial but as I speak to you now two have been captured,” he stated.

“We are already working to capture the remaining inmates on the run.”

Umar also confirmed that one officer lost his life during the attack, while security agencies are deploying all available resources to track down the fugitives.
