Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, on Monday, paid a condolence visit to his Kano State counterpart, Abba Yusuf, following the tragic killing of 16 Kano-bound travellers last Friday.
Arriving at the Kano State Government House at noon, Okpebholo was received by Yusuf and other government officials.
The victims, who were hunters traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, were killed in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, by members of a vigilante group who mistook them for criminals.
Expressing his condolences to the people of Kano and the families of the deceased, Okpebholo described the incident as heartbreaking.
He emphasized the long-standing harmony between the Hausa community and the people of Edo.
He assured Kano residents of swift justice, revealing that 14 suspects had already been arrested and moved to Abuja for interrogation.
In response, Governor Yusuf insisted that those responsible for the killings must be publicly paraded.
He affirmed that Kano remains the most peaceful state in the north, welcoming people from various backgrounds.
He also expressed gratitude to Okpebholo for the timely visit and called for the immediate prosecution of those arrested to ensure justice.
Both governors later visited Toronkawa village in Bunkure Local Government Area, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence.
The killings have drawn widespread condemnation, with President Bola Tinubu directing security agencies to take immediate action.
“The President, who expressed shock at the dastardly act on Thursday, directed Police and other security agencies to conduct swift and thorough investigations and punish the suspected culprits,” presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said in a statement on Friday.
