Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have stated unequivocally that the party has no plans to enter into any merger or coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This declaration comes amid speculations following the formation of a coalition led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other political heavyweights on March 20, 2025.

The PDP Governors’ Forum made its stance clear in a communique issued after a closed-door meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday. The meeting lasted about six hours.

Reading the communique, Chairman of the Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, clarified that while the PDP would not be part of any merger, the party remains open to individuals and groups willing to join its platform to help “rescue Nigeria.”

“The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, it welcomes any party, persons, or groups willing to join it with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” the communique stated.

The meeting also touched on the recent Supreme Court judgment on the position of the party’s national secretary.

The governors proposed that the Deputy National Secretary should step in to act in the role until a substantive Secretary is nominated and ratified from the South East geopolitical zone.

On security, the Forum voiced concern over the increasing wave of violence and insecurity in several parts of the country, citing Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau states in particular.

They called for a restructuring of the nation’s security framework and advocated for a decentralised approach that would grant sub-national governments greater involvement in security operations.

In the wake of the political crisis and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, the PDP governors expressed their support for suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The Forum further announced its intention to hold a national meeting on May 27, 2025, where it would constitute a Zoning Committee ahead of the party’s national convention scheduled for August 28 to 30 in Kano.

According to the communique, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri will chair the Zoning Committee, while Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri will lead the National Convention Committee.
