US President Donald Trump’s special envoy has revealed that Russian President Vladimir Putin is receptive to a “permanent peace” arrangement with Ukraine, following a series of negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war that has lasted more than three years.
Despite Trump’s efforts to broker a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow, progress has remained slow, and no significant breakthroughs have emerged from his administration’s direct talks with the Kremlin.
Last Friday, Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, held his third meeting with President Putin in Saint Petersburg since Trump resumed office in January.
The discussion, according to Witkoff, marked a notable step forward in the pursuit of lasting peace.
Appearing on Fox News Monday, Witkoff said a peace agreement could be within reach.
“Putin’s request is to get to have a permanent peace here. So beyond the ceasefire, we got an answer to that,” he said. “It took a while for us to get to this place.”
Witkoff noted that key Russian officials—Yuri Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev—were present at what he described as a “compelling meeting.”
“I think we might be on the verge of something that would be very, very important for the world at large,” he said.
In addition to peace discussions, Witkoff confirmed that economic cooperation between Russia and the US was also a subject of negotiation.
