The College of Nursing Sciences (CONS), under the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, has officially withdrawn the admission of Seluwa Oluwaseun Vincent, a 300-level student who was earlier suspended indefinitely for protesting against the increase in hostel accommodation fees.

Vincent, who was suspended in January 2025, received a withdrawal letter dated April 7, 2025, signed by the acting registrar of the college, Abe L.O.

The letter accused him of engaging in further misconduct during his suspension.

Vincent’s suspension was based on allegations including the “blatant refusal” to vacate an old hostel off-campus and verbally abusing the Student Affairs Officer (SAO).

The letter of suspension, dated January 3, 2025, was signed by the acting provost, Dr. Awe O. O.

Vincent, however, refuted the accusations in an interview with DAILY GAZETTE, claiming he was being targeted for challenging a hike in hostel fees from N100,000 to N280,000.

He alleged that the SAO, Mrs. Adaramola Bukola Ayodele, was “deliberately victimising him.”

Vincent further alleged that Ayodele defamed him by referring to him as mentally unstable.

“She blackmailed me before the school management and the disciplinary committee, defaming me and calling me a psychiatric patient and a ‘mad’ person,” he said.

In the withdrawal letter, the college cited Vincent’s continued misconduct, stating he had breached Section 5.6 of the 2023 Student’s Information Handbook (page 16), which emphasizes the need for students to “respect constituted authority.”

The letter stated, “It is on record that the Management of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti placed you on indefinite suspension from the College via our correspondence reference number: CONS/EKSUTH/92/30 dated 3rd January, 2025, following cases of gross indiscipline established against you within the College.”

“Despite the above, and upon due investigation, it was gathered that you went ahead to commit another act of indiscipline while undergoing punishment for the aforementioned.”

“These continuous acts of yours contravene the rules and regulations contained in Section 5.6 of the Student’s Information Handbook, 2023 Edition (Pg. 16), of the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti that ‘every student must respect constituted authority’.”

“Consequently, and following due consideration, please be informed that you are hereby withdrawn from the College of Nursing Sciences, Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado-Ekiti with immediate effect for gross misconduct and violation of your Matriculation Oath.”

After his suspension, Vincent petitioned the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, requesting urgent intervention. In the petition, he accused the college of mistreatment, stating he had received threats of expulsion and withdrawal of admission.

The petition alleged ongoing intimidation from the SAO, stating that Vincent, who previously served as the Students’ Union Government Public Relations Officer, had faced “persistent bullying, public humiliation, and multiple threats.”

Vincent also said that “these actions are backed by the College’s Provost, Mrs. Olabisi Awe.”

SaharaReporters confirmed that parents of students at the college also rejected the hostel fee hike during a virtual meeting on April 6.

They appreciated the intervention of the House of Assembly but described the new fees as unjustified, especially given the poor condition of the hostels.

During the meeting, the parents expressed concern about “health and safety hazards,” pointing out that rooms measuring 6×8 feet were overcrowded with four students and that four gas cylinders were used in a kitchen with an asbestos roof.

They also criticized the harassment of students who reported unsafe hostel conditions, saying the management had shown “disregard for students’ welfare and safety.”

Students, too, voiced out against the SAO, accusing her of sustained bullying, verbal abuse, and rights violations.

According to their joint statement, the SAO had physically assaulted students, with some saying they had been “slapped or bullied.”

They also said she had invaded their privacy by demanding access to mobile phones and private messages without legal basis.

Despite the mounting complaints, students lamented that “their pleas had been ignored by authorities within and outside the institution.”

A separate report revealed that the N800 million hostel facility, recently inaugurated by Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, was already showing signs of poor construction, as parts of the building leak heavily when it rains.
